Bob Matsui, D-Sacramento - dead

CNN just finished a eulogy in rememberance of Representative Bob Matsui, D-Sacramento, saying that "he will be sorely missed".

However, I cannot find any accompanying article over the internet.

Can anyone help substantiate this story?  I'll keep digging around for further sources.

*Update*

We must all bow our heads in deference to the honorable Robert "Bob" Matsui. Matsui, 63, died Saturday night at the National Naval Medical Center in Washington. He died from pneumonia, but he was weakened by Milo Dysplastic Disorder.

*Update #2*

We now have an article on the internet found here.

His Web site's empty (none / 0)

I haven't found any news reports online about this, but I notice his Web site has only the header with his picture, and nothing below it except the message:

wow (none / 0)

He looked fine during the DNC event. He went out trying to beat the GOP, as the DCCC head, good for him.

Bob Matsui: a true Democratic leader. (none / 0)

I've watched Bob Matsui for the last 10 years; Ways and Means is one of the committees I spend a fair amount of time in.  He was a strong supporter of everything liberal and Democratic; forceful in his battles with the Republicans in everything from the 1995 and 1996 government shutdowns through the Medicare prescription drug plan and the horribly misnamed "American Jobs Creation Act" which ended up being a huge giveaway to the tobacco companies while putting serious restrictions on, among other things, the ability to give your car away to charity.  I've seen him and Charlie Rangel double-team both Bill Archer and Bill Thomas as chairmen.
He was a formidable opponent to such cretins as Phil Crane, Clay Shaw, Nancy Johnson, and Jim Bunning.  His remarks were always incisive, devastating, and straight to the point.

Though I've often questioned his failure to adopt a 50-state strategy as chair of the DCCC, I feel we have lost an advocate for the things most of us here at dKos hold dear, a champion of liberal and Democratic causes, and a solid in-the-trenches fighter.

Bob Matsui will be missed.

We've lost a strong fighter (none / 0)

I met Bob Matsui a couple of times.  He always struck me as a principled man.  Though he led many of the free trade fights for Clinton, and we were on opposite sides, I grew to respect him.

He was a great spokesman for fixing Social Security the right way and not to privatize it which would only benefit Wall St. traders.

God Bless.

Who's going to take his seat now?

Re: Oh my God (none / 0)

it will be vacant until a special election is held. he represents a Democratic slice of Sacramento County (he was just re-elected with 72%), so any decent Democrat who gets nominated will succeed him.

Re: Oh my God (none / 0)

It's pretty much the whole central part of Sacramento, burbs excluded. Deborah Ortiz perhaps.

Re: Oh my God (none / 0)

We just can't afford to lose one more seat. We're lucky he represented a Democratic area, and it wasn't someone like Chet Edwards that died.

Now, if only a Republican from a blue area would die (just kidding).
